It seems like a good solution if you want access to files on your computer generally, but I think Audiogalaxy is better focused on the music side of things by the sounds of things (no pun intended). I think the cool thing about Audiogalaxy is that it is very easy to set up and works as you expect it to. Thanks for mentioning Tonido though, I hadn't seen it before.

I just found the new Tonido App & Servers last night and it seems to work half well. But it's got a ways to go. My 128kbps AAC rips from 256kbps mp3 files appear as half their real length and play wrong while the original mp3 files appear the correct length and play great. It's FREE and gives you access to everything on the home computer. So in that sense it's an interesting alternative to Audiogalaxy.

Hi Alex - just spotted this post. Congratulations!! Well done on the MSc. Interesting post also. BuddyPress is very good if it's hosted on the right platform. There's a couple of instances of it at the Uni that I know about including one we set up for a project called LitSciMed and another one you may have seen for the Virtual Doctoral School.

I'm not sure, that would be something to take up with virtualmusic.tv since they made the heat map, as I credited in the blog post. It's unusual though, considering it was on the 2009 map. From what I've gathered on this, the raw data comes from compete.com so maybe it's something to do with how they categorise sites.
